Sun Salutation - Surya Namaskar:

Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation, is a series of 12 postures performed in a single, graceful flow. Each movement is coordinated with the breath. Inhale as you extend or stretch towards the sky, and exhale as you fold or contract towards the earth.

The Sun Salutation builds strength, stamina and increases flexibility. Different styles of yoga perform the Sun Salvation with their own variations but the flow presented below covers the basic steps used in most styles.
A single round consists of two complete sequences: one for the right side of the body and the other for the left.

Pose of the season:

Deep Forward Fold - Uttanasana.

 

Folding forwards gives the hamstrings and lumbar spine an intense stretch and the fresh blood rushing to the brain gives you a sense of well-being.

 

Forward bend

 

Start standing with feet together and inhale the arms up above the head.

As you exhale, hinge forwards from the hips, arms lengthening forwards first then all the way down to the floor. If your back is strong, keep the legs straight but if your hands don't reach the floor, feel free to bend the knees a little.

Allow the back of the neck to be long and think more about getting the forehead to the shins instead of the nose to the knees.

As you inhale imagine the breath lengthening up the back of the legs and as you exhale, let the breath cascade down the spine.

To go deeper, shift the weight forward into the balls of the feet rather than leaning back into the heels. You can either press the palms flat on the floor beside the feet of wrap them behind the shins.

Hold this position for 5 deep breaths and come out of it on the inhale, with a flat back and your arms stretching forwards then up.
